From this i tried out the nail idea i was inspired to do but the pencil top bench, I marked out where the nails should go and hammered them into the chair to a relative shallow depth so they could be pulled out but sill in the wood deep enough to not fall out with a light nock.
From this i wanted to actually take some of the nails out so the damaged wood could be shown and this came out with a very interesting pattern work where the holes were relatively uniform but not as expected.
My inspired construct destruct chair tests
Here i have have removed some of the spherical shapes on the front legs of the chair by shaving off the top layers with a craft knife until i got a ruff shape of a more uniform cylinder. Each from leg has had different details removed to create a bit of variety but that also creates a interesting look as well.

Next i tried feathering a part of one of the legs to see how that would work out. I simply got a standly knife and cut into the wood at a off parallel angle to just take up the first few layers and create a feathered effect.

I wanted to look at some more natural influences because dark, evil and magic are associated with nature. i came across a "green" designer (Kai Linke) who create these perspex chairs which is fills with soil and plants that grow and develop in the chairs. the plants used are all fast growing like grasses and bulb plants so the root system fills the chair chasing to create the full effect of the piece.
I then wanted to find some other examples of something similar that may have some other properties that could benefit my work in other ways.
I found this designer called "Kinokoto" who believes that plants carry healing and therapeutic properties and that they can grow almost anywhere and so why not in furniture, he has designed chairs and tables to house plants and grow them.
I like both the integration of the plants but also they have a great destructive power, if tree is large enough or has root systems big enough they can destroy houses, rock and mountain sides and kill anything else near them. i want to take this understanding of the destructive power as well as the aesthetics of plant growing threw a chair and put them together.

During a tutorial discussion we talked about an artiest (Maarten Baas) who who burnt a a wingback arm chair and then goan on to re-up holster and stud it as normal which creates this amazing charred effect with chunks that have been cooked away. The chair was burnt using a blow torch and then dowsed out and coated in a resin to seal in the soot, so can be sat on and will not ruin peoples cloths.
i like the aesthetic look this this creates as well the destructive quality that this would do to a fragile chair but i think that this is an avenue worth looking into.
looking at hand carved furniture or sculpture and from the carving i have done myself i liked the process of taking down layers of wood to end up with the size or shape required. As i was carving and watching videos online on how other people carve i liked the way the wood was feathered and how it is meant for being go rid of but creates some very interesting organic shapes and design.
I also looked for some furniture that came under the name of feathered as that is the term for the process to create the wood shavings. from this search i found this chair designed by "Elyse Hochstadt"
I like the effect the the feathers give as they give a generally flat surface a clean organic texture which is something that i would like to create with my wooden feathering.
Research for destruct and construct piece
I was looking for artists, designers or pieces of work that partly or mostly destructed a piece of furniture to create a new form of design and try to take some inspirational ideas to add to my own work.
I found a bench that had been covered but pencil tops and liked the idea that by attaching the pencils meant having to drill into the bench which would damage the bench but then create a new platform to be used instead.
The bench was designed by a company called "Boex" who design a range of new and innovative 3D design. The bench in question is made from 1625 which are individually sprung to fit the user as the sit, plus each pencil can be taken out and used.
I would like to try and recreate this but using something a little darker in aesthetics to fit with my dark look with my other chairs. With this in mind i have started looking into dark/ evil themes, characters and other such media. I then remembered pinhead from the film "hell raiser" whose head is covered in large nail/pins
With this in mind i think it would suit my chair destruct/ construct and theme if i used nails which would give the dark feel and are cheap and easily available.

My finished skull chair
Here you can see the final skull design on the back and the sides which have been fitted and stained ti match the existing wood stain colour and tone.
